Phyllis Jean Wagley

ADRIAN - Phyllis J. Wagley of Adrian, passed away June 19, 2012 at Lenawee Medical Care Facility under the care of Hospice of Lenawee. Phyllis was born on May 30, 1932, in Montgomery, Michigan, to Clella Marie and Wright Douglas Moats. She graduated in 1950 from Clinton High School as Salutatorian of her class. Phyllis attended the University of Michigan School of Music where she received her degree in 1954. She remained a devoted University of Michigan alumnus throughout her life and faithfully attended football games in The Big House for over 35 years with her husband and best friend Joe. Phyllis (Moats) and Joseph Wagley were married on June 22, 1957. They spent 55 happy years together in Adrian where they raised their family. Phyllis is survived by her husband Joseph; children Pamela (Timothy) Henry of Downers Grove, IL, Janice (Dr. Douglas) Stamps of Newburgh, IN, Joseph III (Rebecca) Wagley of Adrian, and David (Barbara) Wagley of Adrian; grandchildren Matthew (Felicia) Henry, Phillip Henry, William Henry, Ian Stamps, Nathan Stamps, Jessica Wagley, Jennifer Wagley, Adrianne (Patrick) Kaplan, Andrew Wagley, Austin (Danielle) Wagley; soon to be great grandchild Nora; sisters Barbara Bailey, and Kathryn Walker; sister in-law Joan James. She had past involvement with the Region II Planning Commission and the City of Adrian Planning Commission where she served as Chairwomen. Phyllis was a long time member of The First United Methodist Church and also attended The First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Phyllis and Joe were also active at the Community Methodist Church in St. Croix during the winter months. Phyllis was a member and past president of the American Association of University Women; she was a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood, and the Tau Delta Sorority. Phyllis was a devoted wife, loving mother, and nurturing grandmother. Phyllis and Joe were present at most if not all of their children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She loved spending winters with her husband in St. Croix, USVI, reading, traveling, her pets, and everything University of Michigan. She loved traveling with her family through the years. Although she knew and appreciated her many friends and acquaintances she cherished her times spent with her family the most. A celebration of life for Phyllis will take place on Monday, June 25 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Dawes, Rev. Christopher Brundage, and Rev. Linda Farley officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 24, 1 to 4 p.m. at Wagley Funeral Home. Burial will be private at Oakwood Cemetery.
