John Law III

John Kerr Law, 88, known as Jack to his family and friends, passed away January 8, 2012. He was born February 25, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan. Jack was the oldest son of John Kerr and Pearle Evelyn (DeRoche) Law. During his youth, Jack lived in North Carolina, South Carolina and Ohio before coming back to Detroit at 18, where he graduated from Northwestern High School. He served during WWII and then entered Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan, earning his bachelor’s degree and graduating in 1949. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. During his college years, he worked for Montgomery Ward as a stroller maker and for A&P as a stock boy. Jack married Helen Knight of Adrian June 6, 1949. They set up their household initially in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and thereafter lived in Wayne and Belleville. They celebrated 56 years of marriage prior to her death in 2006. On October 18, 2009 Jack married Helen Cox in Adrian, and she survives. Jack retired from Ford Motor Company in Milan, having also worked for Ford in Livonia, Rawsonville and Saline. He started his career at Ford as an accountant, working in Henry Ford’s old office. While raising his children, he was active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a leader of that group where his sons were members. Jack was an Eagle Scout himself and did relief work for the American Red Cross in Ohio after a flood in 1938. He joined the Masons in 1996 and became a Master Mason. After his retirement, Jack continued his many hobbies and was an avid bowler, golfer, softball and card player. He also had a love of Latin music. Jack and his first wife, Helen, joined the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program, MMAP. Jack and Helen traveled the United States and Mexico building and renovating churches of all denominations as volunteers for this Christian organization. During the fall of 1993, Jack traveled to Ukraine with the John Guest Christian Missionary Organization to distribute bibles and other Christian literature and talk to young people about the church and life in the United States. He and his first wife Helen traveled to every state in the United States and in his own words said, “There is so much to see – we are blessed with our wonderful country”. Jack was a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Belleville for many years, a former member of Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Adrian and of the First Congregational Church in Wayne, Michigan. At the time of his passing Jack was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Adrian. In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by his children: Mark (Tracey) Law of Saline; John (Gloria) Law of El Cerrito, California; James (Terry) Law of Canton; and Mary (Sam) Medrano of San Jose, California; six grandchildren, Jason, Michelle, Matthew, Jeremy, Dylan and Shawn; and one great grandson, Elijah King Law. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife Helen Ruby (Knight) Law and his brother Lindsay Law of California. Jack passed away under the kind care of Hospice of Lenawee County and the Grand Court Retirement Community. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Wagley Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Herter officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Online memorials at www.WagleyFuneralHome.com.
