Helen Arlene Woodward

BLISSFIELD- Helen Arlene Woodward, 98 1/2, of Blissfield, Michigan died Friday afternoon, July 28, 2023 at Parkcliffe Community in Northwood, Ohio. She was born on February 19, 1925 in Fairfield Township, MI, the seventh child to Leonard and Clara (Brown) Sallows. Helen grew up on the family farm where she drove a team of horses during harvest season and helped milk the cows. She graduated from Chesterfield High School with the Class of 1943. Helen started waitressing in Morenci before she went to work at the bullet factory during World War II. When Helen was 18 years old, she met Clinton Woodward. They were married one year later on March 4, 1944 in Ohio. In 1956 Helen and Clinton bought a farm in Blissfield that had 80 acres. Helen lived on this farm for the next 67 years where she was a proud farmer’s wife and mother to five children. Helen and Clinton shared 56 years together before he died in 2000. During her lifetime, Helen worked for the phone company, tomato factory and did wallpapering. She was active in 4H when her children were young. She was a wonderful quilter and loved cooking for her family and hosting gatherings Helen was an active part of Habitat for Humanity for 27 years. She enjoyed bowling and participated in leagues for 50 years; she also played neighborhood cards for 45 years. Helen was a cancer survivor. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Riga from 1961-2019, and helped with serving meals at the church. She is survived by her children, Thomas (Carol) Woodward of Jasper, Nancy (Larry) Dangler of Riga and Mary Woodward of Blissfield; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Helen is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clinton; son, David Woodward; and daughter, Sandra Miller. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at 3:00 p.m at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel with Rev. Walt Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 2:00 p.m. until the start of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
