Girture Coon

ADRIAN- Girture Coon, age 96, of Adrian, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. Girture was born on September 10, 1929, in Fayette, Alabama, the daughter of John T. and Susie E. (Madison) Sanford. Girture and her 9 siblings knew the value of working hard from growing up on the family farm, where there were plenty of chores needing attention. She married Cleo Olive Hammack on May 22, 1944, and together they had five children. Life was busy and there was plenty of excitement with their large family. Cleo passed away on August 4, 1979. Girture was fortunate to find love again; and on November 8, 1974, she married Donald J. Coon in Morenci, MI. This union blended two families, making holidays and family gatherings a large celebration. They were blessed to share over 42 years together before Don’s death on November 25, 2016. Girture was a talented multi-tasker as she carried out the roles of wife, mother and factory worker. She worked at American Chain and Cable for 22 years. Girture was born with a green thumb and had vegetables and flowers flourishing around her. She made canning vegetables look easy and passed this skill on to her children. Any day was a good day if Girture could get out with her fishing pole and spend some quiet time on the water. Girture formerly attended Free Will Baptist Church in Adrian. She loved her family greatly and treasured all the memories they created. She will be missed by her children, Ray Hammack (Karyn Purdue), Jimmie (Arthur) Moore, Danny Hammack, Kathy (Ray) Casey, Karen (Manuel) Vallejo; stepchildren, Michael (Oda) Coon and Sheryl (Derek) Lloyd; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Girture was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Cleo Olive Hammack and Donald J. Coon; nine siblings; stepchildren, Stephen (Linda) Coon, son-in-law, John Nieto; daughters-in-law, Nancy Hammack and Carolyn Hammack. Funeral services for Girture will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 12 PM at Wagley Funeral Home, Adrian with Rev. Darrell Hyder officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci, MI. Family will be receiving friends from 11 AM until the service begins. Memorial contributions may be made to Lenawee Medical Care Facility.
