George R. Yansen

ADRIAN - George Richard Yansen, of Adrian, MI, June 15, 2011, age 95. He was born August 1, 1915, in Maynard, OH, to Alexander and Anna Yanssens. Married in North Baltimore, OH, to his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia (Cryer); father of Johanna Lynn Bauer (Ron) of Milford, MI, and infant son David Bruce Yansen, deceased; grandfather/great-grandfather of Barrett Emerson Lewis of Chicago, IL, Amy Mendeljian (Grant) and their children Ryan and Reese of Milford, MI, Lisa Wade (Bryant) and their children Carter and Caitlyn of Rochester Hills, MI, and Ronald Bauer (Karen) and their children Lindsay, Brock and Cade of Scottsdale, AZ. George survived two sisters, Velma Ross and Elizabeth Soos, and three brothers, Albert, Ernest and William. George was a graduate of St. Clairsville High School, OH, and received a B.A. in Education from Adrian College and an M.A. in School Administration from the University of Michigan. His 35 year career as an educator included an elementary teacher in the Hillsdale Schools, Junior High teacher and principal in the Pontiac School District, and auditor for the Michigan Department of Education. George was a life-long believer of Jesus Christ - baptized/member of Maynard Methodist Church, member/held many offices in Central United Methodist Church (Pontiac, then Waterford), and member of First United Methodist Church of Adrian. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and was President/on the Board of Directors of the Oakland Symphony. George loved to garden, woodworking, music, reading and his pets, Pierre and Porsche. He was an avid traveler with family and friends in the US, Europe, and Australia/New Zealand, and he was most proud of organizing 25 trips of Junior High students to Washington, DC. A Celebration of George’s Life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Adrian on Monday, June 20, 2011, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Christopher Brundage officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 19th, at the Wagley Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 1 p.m. until the service begins at 2p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the George and Virginia Yansen Education Scholarship at Adrian College, Hospice of Lenawee, or First United Methodist Church of Adrian.
