Dorothy Mae Bruce

ADRIAN—Dorothy M. Bruce, 93 of Adrian, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Charlotte Stephenson Manor under the loving care of her family and Hospice of Lenawee. She was the second of five children born to Victor D. and Clara M. (Daubenberger) Coyle on December 29, 1923 in Mason City, Iowa. Dorothy had a lifelong pride for her home town and Iowa. She graduated from Mercy Nursing School in 1945 and went to Detroit, MI. to begin her career at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital. On a blind date, arranged by one of the hospital nuns, she met Harry Stanford Bruce and they fell in love. They married on June 21, 1947 and together they raised their children, Kathy (Ray) Juetten of Pelkie, MI, Bob (Sean) Bruce of Sioux Falls, SD, Tricia Bruce of Adrian, and Mary (Steve) Smolinski of Columbus, OH. She is also survived by a sister, Patricia Sloan; grandchildren, Cheryl (Caleb Winter) Juetten, Theresa (Frank) Marsik, Michael Bruce, Matthew Bruce, Ryan (Laura) Smolinski, Stephanie Smolinski, Michael Smolinski and 7 great grandchildren, Hannah and Katie Marsik, Ava and Sadie Smolinski, Lili and Violet Bruce and Sylvia Winter. She enjoyed bird watching, walking and reading. Dorothy loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an extremely enthusiastic fan of Big 10 basketball and football, especially Iowa, Michigan and Michigan State teams. In addition to her parents and her husband of 48 years, she was preceded in death by her son, Rick Bruce; siblings, Donald, Charles and Gerald and a great grandson, Henry Bruce. Visitation for Dorothy will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 30 at Wagley Funeral Home with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. on Friday, March 31, 2017 at St. Mary of Good Counsel Parish, Adrian with Rev. Thomas Murphy as celebrant. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, MI. The family would like to thank the Charlotte Stephenson Manor staff for the wonderful, incredible care shown to Dorothy.
