Barbara A Hood

Manitou Beach—Barbara Ann Hood, 83, formerly of Adrian, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Allegiance Hospital, Jackson, surrounded by her loving family. She was the only daughter of Roland B. and Anna M. (Puchalski) Atkinson, born on May 23, 1933 in Springfield, MA. She graduated from Springfield Classical High School in 1951 and went on to Bay Path University to become a medical assistant. On May 26, 1956, Barbara married Dr. Herbert Hood Sr. in Ann Arbor, MI., they celebrated 60 years of marriage. She worked as a field manager, doing radon and electrical magnet field studies for the US Public Health Services. Barbara lived a full wonderful life, she loved her family and friends. She was a member of Civitan of Lenawee, serving as past president, Adrian and Lakeland, FL Red Hat Society and was the first woman president of Island Park Association of Round Lake. She enjoyed shopping, gardening, reading, especially Bill O’Reilly’s books, and fashion. Caring for her family and friends was very important to Barbara, she would often volunteer to take friends to their doctor’s appointments. While wintering in Lakeland, FL, Barbara and Dr. Hood would volunteer as ushers at the Tiger’s spring training. She never knew a stranger, she loved talking with anyone, especially about politics. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Herbert Hood of Manitou Beach; her children, William A. Hood of Manitou Beach, Kimberly A. (Steve) Williams of Sand Creek, James M. (Karen W.) Hood of Littleton, NH, Dr. Richard K. Hood of Naples, FL, Dr. Scott C. (Raelynn) Hood of Adrian; grandchildren, Marissa, Harper, Nicole, Rachelle, James, Daniel, Michael, Sue, Matthew and Steven; great grandchildren, Angela, Colin and Natalie; and her siblings, Richard R. Atkinson of Farmington, CT and Howard L. Atkinson of Goodyear, AZ. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Herbert Hood, Jr. Funeral services will be 1 pm on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Wagley Funeral Home, Adrian. Burial will follow at Lenawee Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Civitan of Lenawee. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
