BLISSFIELD – Norman “Red” Paul Suydam, Sr., 85, of Blissfield, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at home with his family by his side under the care of Elara Caring Hospice. He was born on August 14, 1935 to Ivan and Dorothy (Davis) Suydam in Adrian, MI. Red graduated from Adrian High School and joined the National Guard, serving from 1954 to 1957. On June 2, 1956, Red married Yvonne Bussing at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, in Blissfield. They celebrated 48 years together as husband and wife before her passing in 2005. Blessed with four children, they created many happy memories over the years. Red worked at American Chain and Cable for 33 years, working on the floor and later as the supervisor of receiving inspection before retiring in 1987. Red was a member of Light of Christ Parish, St. Peter the Apostle Church, and often ran and called bingo for the church. He was previously involved with North Adrian Grange, United Auto Workers, Moose Lodge #1034 and Civitan of Lenawee. Red was a talented artist and worked with stained glass and refinished the doors at St. Peter the Apostle Church. He loved writing poetry and was most proud of the publication of his poem, “Our Little Angel”. He also enjoyed fishing as well as roller-skating in his younger years at Hilltop. Red is survived by his children, Norman Paul (Fran) Jr. of Toledo, OH, Jeannie (Louis) LaPlante of Sebring, FL, Lisa (Bill) Gritzmaker of Blissfield and Anthony (Shelia) Suydam of Adrian; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and step-sister, Yvonne (Bob) Gilbert of Adrian. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; his step-mother, Erma Suydam; siblings, Calvin and Ike Suydam; granddaughter, Cassandra; granddaughter-in-law, Lisa; unborn great-granddaughter, Abigail; and special friend, Lottie Swan. Visitation for Red will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield, with a Rosary starting 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated by Father Jeff Poll on Wednesday, June 2, at 1:00 p.m. at Light of Christ Parish, St. Peter the Apostle Church. Rite of Committal will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Blissfield. Military Rites will be provided by the Blissfield American Legion Post #325 and VFW Post #158.
