ONSTED – Michael B. “Mike” Hiatt, age 72, of Onsted, passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2021, after many health challenges over the years. Mike was born on February 23, 1949, to Ralph C. and Virginia Eileen (Smith) Hiatt in Adrian, Michigan. A graduate from Adrian High School with the Class of 1967, Mike went on to attend Cleary University earning his bachelor’s degree in business in 1972. He used his skills for business and went on to be president of M.B. Hiatt, Inc.; Hiatt Property, Inc.; CGE Electrical Products and owner of MIDWEST TROUTFITTERS. On July 24, 2004, Mike married Bonnie Welzbacher and they have shared over 16 wonderful years together. Mike was a member of ASHRAE- American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers. He was a past member of the Lenawee and Tecumseh Country Clubs and Devils Lake Yacht Club. Mike was also a life member of Trout Unlimited and past president of the Lenawee Chapter. He found time to be involved with Federation of Fly Fishers, United Fly Tiers, Anglers of the Ausable and the Upper Manistee River Association. As you may have guessed, Mike’s passion for many years was fishing. He enjoyed all types of fishing but fly fishing was by far his favorite pastime. He looked forward to his annual trip to the Nelson Cabin, on the Manistee River outside of Grayling. Mike was a storyteller and loved to embellish his tales to family and friends; a trait that he inherited from his father, Ralph. He enjoyed teaching his children how to fish and about the great outdoors. He loved all animals and would put out feed for his friends which included deer, rabbits, ducks, geese, chickens and his personal favorite, the Sand Hill Cranes. In addition to his wife, Bonnie, he is survived by his children, Victoria and Mitchell Hiatt at home; his grown children Erica Hiatt and Michael Hiatt II; siblings, Rene Coscarelli, Russell (Michele) Hiatt and Eris (Gene) Dull; in-laws, James and Barbara Welzbacher and sister-in-law, Jill Ruder. Mike was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 11a.m. at Wagley Funeral Home in Adrian, with Minister Paul Taylor officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
