ADRIAN—J. Gregg Arbaugh , age 91, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility, Adrian. J. Gregg Arbaugh was born February 8, 1926 in Wellsville, Ohio, the son of Raymond J. and Edna E. Arbaugh. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1943. He was a member of the U.S. Navy in WW II serving in the South Pacific as a radioman on three ships, USS Wasatch, USS Yorktown and USS Kitkun Bay, participating in four battle encounters. Gregg graduated from Adrian College with a B.S. degree in 1950 and the University of Michigan with a Master’s degree in 1956. He became a teacher, coach and athletic director at Morenci High School in 1951-57. He returned to Adrian College as a professor, coach and athletic director retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1986. Gregg was the originator and developer of the Adrian College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was an active athlete, named to the All-State High School teams in football and basketball in Ohio. He was also the short stop on the WABJ team in the traveling Mid-West fast pitch league. He was the captain and MVP of both the basketball and baseball teams at Adrian College. Gregg was named to the Adrian College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982 and to the Wellsville High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion Post 97 serving as an officer for several years, as chaplain, historian and adjutant member of VFW Post 1584. He was selected to attend the dedication of the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C in May 2004 and named United Veterans Honorable Veteran of the Year in Lenawee County 2004 -2005. He is survived by his son, Jay Gregg (Mary) Arbaugh of Schoolcraft, MI; two daughters, Pamela (Bruce) Martin of Millersburg, OH and Leslie (Sonny) Salazar of Adrian; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; and a sister, Delight King of Van Wert, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 66 years, Dorothy E. Arbaugh. Funeral services for Gregg will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Wagley Funeral Home, Adrian with Rev. Larry Betz officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Annis-Flint Post #1584 and the American Legion Post #97 of Adrian. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 16, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Lenawee; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
