Baltazar "Walter" Cantu

February 3, 1929 - June 24, 2017

ADRIAN – Baltazar “Walter” Cantu, age 88 of Adrian, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 3, 1929, in Victoria, Texas, the son of the late Exiquel and Tiofila (Arriaga) Cantu. Walter married Ricarda Flores in 1947, and she survives. In 1988, Walter retired from Tecumseh Products with 43 years of service. He was a faithful member of St. Mary of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Walter enjoyed tinkering with electronics, and earned certification from Massey Technical Institute in television and radio. He loved spending time with his family, gardening, hunting, fishing, wine making, and brewing beer. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Eddie (Louisa) Cantu of Somerset, MI, Gloria Garcia and Richard J. Cantu, both of Edinburg, TX, and Tiofila Martinez of Victoria, TX; daughter-in-law, Mary Cantu of Somerset, MI; a brother, Jesse Cantu of Mission, TX; 15 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by siblings: Exiquel, Jeanette, Joe, Jimmy, and Diego; a son, Alfred Cantu; grandson, Alfred Cantu Jr.; and granddaughter, Marina Garcia. Mass of the Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 29, 2017 at St. Mary of Good Counsel Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Murphy OSFS as officiant. Burial will follow at Somerset Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Wagley Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m., and again Thursday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Lenawee.
