John E. Witt

DEERFIELD- John Edwin Witt, age 88, of Deerfield, Michigan died Wednesday evening, May 8, 2024, at the Hospice of Lenawee Home surrounded by his family. John was born on January 6, 1936, in Deerfield, MI the son of William L. and Ardis A. (Fitch) Witt. He graduated from Deerfield High School, with the Class of 1954, where he played on the football, basketball and baseball teams. John proudly served in the United States Army from 1955-1957. On May 4, 1957, John married Joan Shettleroe at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Deerfield, MI. John was employed as a commercial carpenter for Ann Arbor Ceiling & Partition before retiring after 35 years of service. He stayed active after retirement by volunteering at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church where he was a member. He was also an active member of the Deerfield American Legion Post 392 and volunteered at many of their events. John played softball on the Iott Insurance travel team and was a part of several bowling leagues in the area. He will be remembered as a sociable and outgoing person who enjoyed working with his hands, building and fixing things. Above all else, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who loved his family dearly. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 67 years, Joan; daughter, Vicki M. (Cameron) VanArsdalen of Defiance, OH; son, John R. (Lori) Witt of Brooklyn, MI; sisters, Gaynelle Sharrock and Patricia Wright; grandchildren, Amy VanArsdalen (Bo Clum), Kyle VanArsdalen, David (Alison) VanArsdalen, Ryan (Ilka) Witt, Amanda (Jon) Dezelske, Shannon (TJ) Quinn and honorary grandchild, Wesley Keller; 8 great grandchildren along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. John was preceded in death by his parents, son, Billy Witt, brother, James Witt and brothers-in-law, Harley Sharrock and Victor Wright. A Mass of Resurrection for the soul of John will be celebrated by Fr. Jeffrey Poll on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Light of Christ Parish, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. The family will receive guests for a memorial visitation also on Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until Mass begins. Inurnment will occur at St. Alphonsus cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Hospice of Lenawee. Arrangements have been entrusted to Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield.
