Edward Michael "Mike" Benes

BROOKLYN- Edward Michael “Mike” Benes, age 86, of Brooklyn, MI, passed away at the Hospice of Lenawee home on Thursday, July 23, 2026, surrounded by the love and support of his family. Mike was born on February 12, 1940, in Detroit, MI, the oldest child of Edward and Mary (Hatswell) Benes. He graduated from Berkley High School in 1957 and went on to attend Adrian College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. He completed his studies with a Master’s in Education from Eastern Michigan University. It was during his time at Adrian College that Mike met a lovely co-ed named Sandra “Sandy” Dunny. Mike and Sandy were married on August 25, 1962, at Christ Episcopal Church in Adrian. During their marriage their love deepened and their faith grew. In their 63-year marriage, they were blessed with four children and seven grandchildren who brought much excitement and laughter into the family home. Mike started his teaching career in Sylvania, Ohio, where he taught 6th grade for four years. His career led him back to Michigan and Adrian Public Schools where he was a physical education teacher. His first stop was Michener and after a few years he transitioned into the role of Principal. He made an impact on all the schools he was a part of, including Prairie, Drager Middle School, Garfield and Alexander; retiring after 32 years in the educational field. Mike was a longtime member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Cambridge Junction. He gave back to his community with his involvement in the Lions Club. Mike enjoyed being outdoors and was always ready to go fishing or head out onto the golf course. He was a true Detroit fan and looked forward to the next sport season where he would cheer on the Detroit Lions and Red Wings. There were many fond memories created when the family would get together in Beulah, MI at the family property. In addition to his wife, Sandy, Mike is survived by their children, Wendy (Jeffrey) Benes-Williams, Geoffrey (Kristen) Benes, Kristin Barber (Jon Harris) and Andrew (Sarah Martin) Benes; grandchildren, Alyssa (Alex Mitchell) Benes, Nicholas Williams, Matthew Benes (Jaclyn McGraw), Miranda Barber (Steven Speare), Kaylee Barber, Lily Benes and Drew Benes. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Dolittle. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Cambridge Junction, with The Reverend Diana Walworth. Memorial visitation will take place on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 4 to 6 PM at Wagley Funeral Home, Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to the “The Bentastics Team”, Mike’s family, who walk in support of the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church or Hospice of Lenawee.
