Daniel L. Giroux

ONSTED – Daniel L. Giroux, age 66 of Onsted, passed away Monday, December 23, 2013, at his home surrounded by the family he loved. He was born July 28, 1947 in Adrian, Michigan, the son of the late Leo and Lillian (Grinnell) Giroux, and graduated from Onsted High School with the Class of 1965. Dan drove an ammunition truck while serving in the Army in Vietnam. On February 14, 1970, Dan married Bonnie Holbert, and she survives. For the past 44 years, Dan has been a member of the Stevenson Lumber family and a co-owner since 1984. Dan loved Onsted High School football and spent the past 29 years on the sidelines working with the chain gang. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing from his pontoon boat, camping, and mowing his lawn with his constant companion, his dog, “Tag”. Dan always looked forward to Sunday evening family dinners. Known affectionately by many as “Big Dan”, he was truly great in strength, not just physically, but in character. His big heart matched his size. In addition to Bonnie, his wife of 43 years, he is survived by their children, Alisa (Keith) Risner and Nathan (Shannon) Giroux, both of Onsted; grandchildren: Bailey and Benjamin Risner, both of Onsted; Michael, Lucas, Quelyn, Brevonna and Marissa Bekkering, all of Hudsonville, MI; brothers, Joseph (Opal) Giroux of Ishpeming, MI; and David P. (Dorothy) Giroux of Onsted; brother-in-law, W. Terry (Josie) Holbert of Sylvania; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Giroux of Onsted and Jackie Giroux of Toledo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Judy Simmerson and Leora Giroux; and brothers, Ronald and Gordon Giroux. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Wagley Funeral Home with Rev. Linda Farley officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, December 27, 2013 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Contributions in memory of Dan may be made to the Lenawee County Education Foundation to establish a scholarship for those pursuing an education or career in building trades.
