Charles R. Coberley

Charles R. Coberley, age 56, of Brooklyn, MI passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017, at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital in Jackson, MI. He was born Saturday, May 21st, 1960 in Toledo, OH, son of Loretta (Rang) and the late LeRoy Coberley. Charles graduated as valedictorian from Onsted High School in 1978 and went on to attend Northwestern University. He began his professional life as a financial advisor in New York, where he found his soulmate, Kim, and asked her to start their life journey together. They moved to Michigan in 1999, to continue their journey and be closer to relatives. Charles had a 30 year career as a financial advisor/senior portfolio manager in both New York and Michigan. His passion was helping others shape their legacy through wealth management. Charles was very dedicated to philanthropy and serving his community. He contributed his time, talents and treasures in many ways, including his involvement in the Lenawee College Access Network, Girl Scouts as an adult volunteer, Habitat for Humanity volunteering, Onsted Community School Foundation, Onsted Community Recreation soccer and basketball coach, and the former St. Peter’s Episcopal Church vestry. He loved to watch science fiction movies with his daughters, had a thirst for knowledge, and enjoyed sunrise walks in Delaware on the beach when visiting his in-laws and evening walks in Brooklyn, MI on the “back 40.” Charles enjoyed kayaking, hiking, and traveling. He was a well-known pun-master to his family and an avid reader. One of his great joys was bringing his wife’s rock garden visions to life by hunting for and arranging unique collections for the home landscape. Left to cherish his memory is his best friend and loving wife of 25 years, Kim (Custance) Coberley; his daughters, Katelyn, Charlotte, and Emma; his mother, Loretta (Rang) Coberley; his father-in-law, Fredric W. Custance; his sisters Lisa Cyrus (Jim) of Brighton, MI; Cathy Merritt (Ed) of Whitelake, MI; Susan Holland (Greg) of Jackson, MI; Michelle McLemore (Mike) of Brooklyn, MI; and his many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, May 31st at the Brick Walker Tavern Barn, located at 11705 US-12, Brooklyn, MI 49230. There will be a short spiritual ceremony starting at 4:00pm. Friends and family members are encouraged to bring their favorite memories to share until the close of the celebration at 8:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the new Coberley Legacy Scholarship Fund through the Lenawee Community Foundation.
